This course is suitable for any registered physiotherapist who has an interest in pelvic health and pelvic organ prolapse assessment and treatment. There will be both theory and practical components.

Course attendees must have attended an introductory course in female pelvic health and be carrying out vaginal examinations as part of their practice.

Topics covered will include the anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor in relation to pelvic organ prolapse, types of pelvic organ prolapse, subjective and objective assessment (including vaginal examination supine and standing) and treatment strategies. An important focus of this course will be internal vaginal examinations which all participants are expected to partake in.

  • To assist participants to understand basic anatomy relevant to female pelvic organ prolapse and use appropriate terminology.
  • To introduce evidence-based information on pelvic floor examination and assessment of female pelvic organ prolapse for physiotherapists.
  • To enable participants to use simple assessment and treatment procedures in advising/treating female pelvic organ prolapse.
On completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Use their knowledge to identify and understand female pelvic anatomy and pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Complete an assessment of a female patient with pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Follow the correct consent process for vaginal assessment of pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic floor muscles for patients with pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Perform vaginal examination relevant to a patient with pelvic organ prolapse (supine and standing) in a safe, professional manner.
  • Formulate an effective management plan for physiotherapy treatment of female pelvic organ prolapse.
